Tandjung Sari opened in 1962 as a private retreat before becoming, by most accounts, Bali's first boutique hotel — a small run of bungalows on a former temple site, still run by the same family. The rooms keep the original idea: thatched roofs, carved doors, coral-stone walls and private gardens, with the Bungalow - Beach Front category putting you steps from the sand.
The beach sits on a stretch of Sanur that's calm and historically reef-protected rather than dramatic — sources describe it as better suited to a quiet sit or sunset dinner than serious swimming, which is what the saltwater pool is for. There's a fitness centre and yoga pavilion but no spa; massages are arranged rather than menu-driven, worth booking properly elsewhere if that matters to your trip.
Some rooms show their age next to newer Sanur hotels, and the Family Bungalows trade the thatched-roof character for plainer ceilings — ask which category you're getting if architecture is why you're booking. Meal plan varies by rate, though breakfast here is cooked to order. The airport is about 20 minutes by taxi, and Cafe Batu Jimbar and Sanur's beachfront shops are an easy walk up the same road; boats to Nusa Penida leave from Sanur's harbour a little further along, booked separately from the hotel.
