Alila Villas Uluwatu sits on a limestone plateau at Pecatu, where the cliffs drop to the Indian Ocean, 6 km from Uluwatu Temple. It has 65 villas and no ordinary rooms. Every villa has its own pool and cabana, the one-bedroom villas cover 290 m², most of it outdoor space, and a butler looks after each one around the clock.
You come here to stay in. There is a 50-metre cliffside pool, the Sunset Cabana Bar on the edge with violin at sunset on Saturdays, CIRE for international dishes with organic produce, The Warung for Indonesian and Balinese food, and Batique for whisky and cigars. Spa Alila runs a two-hour treatment in the Cliff Edge Spa Cabana, and there is yoga every morning. Meal plan varies by rate; you see what is included on the booking screen before you pay.
The trade-off is distance. Nothing is walkable, the beach is a small cove at the bottom of a long stairway, and there is no kids' club. Life here is outdoors, so go in the dry season, April to October. Book it for a honeymoon or a quiet week as a couple; with small children, choose AYANA Resort Bali instead.
