A big Sharks Bay resort in two halves: the newer Beachside on the water with the house reef and pontoons, and the dated Mountainside up the slope, linked by shuttle bus and buggy. Soho Square is five minutes on foot. Book Beachside and you get one of the better reef-and-location combinations in Sharm; book Mountainside and you get the same reef with a commute.

DoubleTree by Hilton Sharks Bay, the former Hilton Sharks Bay, is really two resorts. Beachside sits on the water at Ras Nasrani with the pontoons, the house reef and the newer rooms. Mountainside is up the slope behind it: larger rooms, its own pools and main restaurant, and a shuttle bus or buggy down to the sea. Around 600 rooms in all.

The reef is why you come. Coral starts within metres of the pontoons, reviewers talk about hundreds of fish, snorkel gear is free against a deposit, and there is a dive centre on site. The beach itself is terraced with a thin strip of sand; you swim from the pontoons in reef shoes, not from the shore. Dining runs to El Mattam (buffet), Il Rustico, Cala and Open Bistro, with Q Club as an adults-only bar. Meal plan varies by rate.

The location seals it: Soho Square, Sharm's pedestrian square of restaurants and bars, is five minutes on foot, the airport is 11 km, Naama Bay about 20 minutes by car. The cons are Mountainside's dated rooms and the commute, construction noise in some recent reviews, and service that varies with who you get. Book Beachside, take reef shoes, and it is one of the easier Sharm choices.

Mountainside rooms are dated and a steep walk from the beach.

A fantastic place to stay with friendly attentive staff and excellent pools. There were 2 pool bars which were swim up or could be accessed dry. The food was fantastic with lots of options. I travelled with 2 fussy eaters but we were able to find something for them both at every meal. The staff could not do enough for you I would like to make a special mention of Mohamed Ebrahim who welcomed us daily and was always on hand to fetch us drinks or anything else we wanted. The bus to the beach was great. Although it is not far taking the bus faves some restbite from the heat.

Rooms did not have hair dryers. Even on requesting we did not get these. They also did not have robes and slippers in the rooms as most other doubletree hotels do. Food needs better labelling for allergens /cross contamination in case of allergies. Luckily we were good at avoiding items that had been cross contaminated and made calculated choices of ‘safe’ food

No. It is a family resort with a kids' club, a playground and a kids' pool with a slide. Q Club is an adults-only bar, and that is the extent of it. For adults-only in Sharks Bay, Meraki is nearby.

What are the beach and reef like?

A terraced beach with a thin strip of sand and coral right at the shoreline, so you enter from the pontoons in reef shoes. The house reef is the point: corals and hundreds of fish within metres, free snorkel gear against a deposit, and a dive centre on site.

How far is the hotel from Sharm El Sheikh airport?

Hilton gives 11 km; TripAdvisor lists about 18 minutes. There is no hotel airport shuttle, so take a taxi or pre-book a car.

Beachside or Mountainside, which should I book?

Beachside. Reviewers who moved from Mountainside say the difference is clear: newer rooms and the beach at the door. Mountainside rooms are larger (the Deluxe is 41 sqm) and usually cost less, but they are dated, it is a steep walk or a shuttle to the sea, and they eat at their own main restaurant.

Can I walk anywhere from the hotel?

Yes. Soho Square's restaurants, bars and shops are about five minutes on foot. Naama Bay is about 20 minutes by car.
