Sharm El Sheikh to the Pyramids in one day: flight, visa and the day in order

Short answer

Yes, in one long day, and by plane. Sharm to Cairo is about an hour in the air, against five hours or more each way by road. The free Sinai stamp does not cover Cairo, so you need a full Egypt visa, bought before passport control at Sharm airport. The Cairo day is optional: a local provider runs it, and it is booked and paid for separately from your hotel.

Most people come to Sharm for the beach and the reef, with Cairo a short flight away. One day is enough for the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, a museum and lunch, if you fly, start before dawn and accept a late night.

We checked this page on 20 October 2026 against the UK Foreign Office's Egypt travel advice, Egypt's official e-visa site and Türkiye's Foreign Ministry notice for Egypt, and against published opening hours and flight and road timings. Rules, fees and opening hours change, so check again before you fly.

The Cairo day is optional. A local provider runs it, it does not run every day, and you book and pay for it separately from your hotel. The hotel is booked through our hotel booking partner at the live rate.

The Cairo day, step by step (checked 20 October 2026)

  1. Get the visa before you land in Sharm

The free Sinai stamp covers Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba. Cairo is outside it. The UK Foreign Office says that if you plan to travel outside the resorts you must get a visa.

At Sharm airport, buy the visa at the kiosks before the immigration counters: USD 30, cash only, valid for up to 30 days. UK and EU passport holders can apply online first on Egypt's official e-visa site, visa2egypt.gov.eg (USD 30 for a single entry). Türkiye is not on the e-visa list, so Turkish citizens buy at the airport. Other passports: check the e-visa list and ask your airline.

The fee is expected to rise to USD 33 on 1 January 2027. Your passport must be valid for six months from the day you arrive and have a blank page. The full rules are on our Sharm El Sheikh visa page.

  2. Fly, don't drive

Fly. Sharm to Cairo is about an hour in the air. By road it is about 490 km: roughly five hours each way by car and seven or more by bus. A day trip by road leaves very little time in Cairo, and the UK Foreign Office advises against driving outside main cities and resorts at night.

The Cairo day is optional. A local provider runs it, and it is booked and paid for separately from your hotel. Check what the programme covers, including the flights and lunch, before you book.

  3. Pick your hotel dates around the Cairo day

The Cairo day does not run every day. Check the days on its activity page first, then choose your hotel dates around them. The price is set by the provider and shown on the same page. The visa is a separate cost.

Leave the day before and the day after free. The Cairo day starts before dawn and ends late.

  4. The day, in order

Before dawn. The provider collects you from your hotel and takes you to Sharm airport. Bring your passport and your visa.

Early morning. A flight of about an hour to Cairo, then the drive to Giza.

Morning. The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. The plateau is listed as open from 8:00 to 16:00. The ticket does not cover going inside the Great Pyramid, Khafre's pyramid or Menkaure's pyramid, which need separate tickets.

Midday. Lunch in Cairo. A camel ride and a felucca sail on the Nile are sometimes part of the programme and sometimes an extra, so ask which.

Afternoon. A museum, depending on the programme (see step 5).

Evening. Back to the airport, the flight to Sharm and the drive to your hotel.

Late at night. Bed. Plan nothing for the next morning.

  5. Giza and the museum

Two museums come up on a Cairo day. The Grand Egyptian Museum officially opened on 1 November 2025, close to the Pyramids, and shows Tutankhamun's treasures together, with the golden mask. The older Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, in central Cairo, is still open.

Which one your day includes depends on the programme. Ask before you book. If Tutankhamun is the reason you are going, ask for the Grand Egyptian Museum.

  6. What to wear and bring

Light, loose clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, comfortable closed shoes, a hat and sunglasses. The UK Foreign Office advises dressing modestly, especially at mosques and in markets.

Bring a layer. In January, Sharm drops to about 14 °C at night and Cairo reaches about 19 °C in the afternoon. Keep your passport, your visa and some cash for small extras in a small bag, and travel light.

  7. Who it suits, and children

It suits first-timers who do not want to leave Egypt without seeing the Pyramids, couples, and families with older children. It is not for anyone who wants a slow holiday day, or who finds early starts and long walks on uneven ground hard.

We suggest it for children of about 8 and over, because the day is very long. Ask the provider for the minimum age before you book, and check the visa rules for every traveller, children included.

  8. When to go

November to March is the comfortable stretch, with Cairo afternoons at about 19 to 25 °C. October and April are warmer, at about 28 to 30 °C. From June to September the afternoons reach 33 to 35 °C, which makes a day in the open hard going.

Steigenberger Alcazar is the hotel in our five-night Pyramids plan: a well-run Nabq Bay resort of arches and swim-up terraces, about 15 minutes from the airport. It has five à la carte restaurants, so dinner after the long day needs no planning. The caveat: the sea is a shallow lagoon at low tide, and Naama Bay is about 25 minutes away by taxi.

    Who it suits:

Four Seasons is about 10 minutes from the airport, one of the closest resorts, with a house reef off two jetties. It is Sharm's most polished resort. It suits couples and families with older children who want a short, comfortable first trip. The caveat: everything is à la carte at high prices, and the hillside means stairs, buggies and a funicular.

  4. airport ~15 minwalk-in beachpromenade on foot

The pick for evenings out on the nights either side of the Cairo day.

    Who it suits:

Questions before you book

Can you visit the Pyramids from Sharm El Sheikh in one day?

Yes, by plane. It is a very long day: you leave before dawn and get back late in the evening. The Cairo day is optional, run by a local provider and booked separately from your hotel.

Do I need a visa to go from Sharm to Cairo?

Yes. The free Sinai stamp covers Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba, not Cairo. Buy the visa at the kiosks before passport control at Sharm airport (USD 30, cash only), or apply online first if your passport is on Egypt's e-visa list.

Is it better to fly or go by road?

Fly. The flight is about an hour. By road it is about 490 km, roughly five hours each way by car and seven or more by bus, which leaves little time in Cairo.

Can I go inside the Great Pyramid?

The plateau ticket does not cover the inside of the Great Pyramid, Khafre's pyramid or Menkaure's pyramid. Those need separate tickets. Ask the provider whether your programme covers them.

Which museum will I see in Cairo?

That depends on the programme. The Grand Egyptian Museum, close to the Pyramids, shows Tutankhamun's treasures, including the golden mask. The older Egyptian Museum is in Tahrir Square. Ask before you book.

What should I wear for the Pyramids day trip?

Light, loose clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, comfortable closed shoes, a hat and sunglasses. Bring a layer for the early morning and the evening.

Is the Cairo day suitable for children?

We suggest children of about 8 and over, because the day is very long. Ask the provider for the minimum age, and check the visa rules for every traveller.

When is the best time for a day at the Pyramids?

November to March, when Cairo afternoons are about 19 to 25 °C. October and April are warmer, and June to September is hot, at 33 to 35 °C in the afternoon.

How do I book the Cairo day, and what does it cost?

It is booked and paid for separately from your hotel, on the provider's terms. The price is on the activity page. The visa is a separate cost.
