Puri Saren Agung, the palace of Ubud's royal family, is on Jalan Raya Ubud in the centre of town, and the family still lives in its inner part. You can walk through the front courtyards, past carved doors and stone statues, and a Legong dance is staged in the courtyard every evening. Across the road, the Ubud Art Market sells rattan bags, batik and ikat textiles, silver jewellery, wood carvings and souvenirs. Early in the morning the same building holds a fruit and vegetable market.
The royal family still lives in the back. You can walk through the front courtyards for free, no sarong needed, just cover your shoulders and knees. Across the road the art market is all bargaining; if a price isn't right, the same thing is a few stalls along. Stay for the Legong dance in the evening: buy the ticket at the gate and come early for a seat.

A small design hotel built around an art gallery, live music and a restaurant; there is no shared pool, and only the top suite category has its own. The beach is about six minutes on foot; light sleepers should factor in street noise and thin walls.
Prices and availability are checked live before booking.
