Located north of Ubud and sustained by the ancient UNESCO-listed 'Subak' irrigation system, Tegalalang is a magnificent natural wonder where emerald green rice terraces carve out a living, breathing amphitheater along the valley.

Everyone in Tegalalang chases those famous swings. Yet, the true magic begins when you descend to the lowest tiers of the valley at first light. Listening to the rhythm of the thousand-year-old 'Subak' water system amidst the scent of morning dew is the ultimate way to feel the island's unfiltered spirit. Step away from the crowds at the top and simply walk through this flawless natural engineering.

I use this place as a simple walking break in Naama Bay. It does not always show clearly on Google Maps, so it is easy to miss, but the location is useful: grab a cold drink, sit under the palms for a few minutes, then keep walking towards the market or back along the beach.
